Obituary

MANTUA

Walter Lee Stewart, 83 years of age of Mantua, born February 25, 1938,  the son of the late Walter and Mary (Commins) Stewart. He was taken into the arms of the Lord peacefully on January 21, 2022.  He led an eventful life, filled with love and service toward others. He met the love of his life and wife of 61 years, Marilyn Mills, at the tender age of 14 while working on his uncle’s farm. The couple wed on October 25, 1958, and he never stopped loving her for the remainder of his life. Walter and Marilyn put down roots in Mantua, Ohio in 1965. They raised three sons and one daughter. Walter was a man of great strength and determination—he served his country proudly as a member of the United States Marine Corps. That determination spurred him to achieve many goals, including completing a marathon—one of his proudest physical accomplishments. However, he also exhibited a kind and gentle spirit, which had a profound impact on many lives. He and Marilyn were prayer warriors and partnered together to serve in many capacities, including volunteering as children’s church directors, operating a nursing home ministry for over 30 years, taking missionary trips to South America and Asia, and mentoring and supporting foreign missionaries. They also blessed many people through Meals by Marilyn and Christmas Tree Hollow Catering. Walter loved children—especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren—and was a role model to many individuals, mentoring them in their journey with Christ. He always made time for conversations with others, with a cup of coffee and a listening ear. He loved spending time with his family, studying the Bible, golfing, cycling, gardening, and going on his annual hunting and fishing trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He is preceded in death by Marilyn, his wife of 61 years, and daughter, Tammi. He is survived by his brother Jack (Ruth) Stewart and sister, Rose Wysmierski; his sons W. Mark (Beverly) Stewart of Ravenna, Doug (Diane) Stewart of Spokane, WA, and Steve (Jennifer) Stewart of Mantua; his grandchildren Monica (Andrew) Pitts, Trevor (Abigail) Stewart, Tyler (Allyssa) Stewart, Meredith (Kyle) Stanhope, Daniel (Rebekah) Stewart, and Jonathan Peter Stewart;  and nine great-grandchildren, who will carry on his legacy of loving Jesus and loving others.  Final resting place will take place Friday February 18, 2022, 2:00 P.M. at Hillside Cemetery, Mantua Village with Military Honors provided by the U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard Team, assisted by members of Mantua American Legion Post No. 193. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 19, 2022 at River of Life Community Church, 5649 Stow Rd., Hudson, Ohio 44236 at 11:00 A.M., where visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M. prior to the service.
