Obituary

RAVENNA

Sarah Mary Hornyak, 95 years of age, passed away Sunday October 25, 2020 at her residence with her family by her side. Born in New Castle, Pennsylvania on December 30, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Romolo and Rosalia (Sapienza) Pandolfi. A lifetime resident of Ravenna, Mrs. Hornyak was a 1943 graduate of Ravenna High School. Mrs. Hornyak failed first grade of school , as she had yet to learn how to speak English, keeping the Italian heritage of her early years in the daily life of the family. Growing up, dancing was an enjoyment that often resulted in walking a lengthy distance with family and friends to a dance hall. Upon meeting her husband, their love for each other was often expressed in the continuation of dancing. Mrs. Hornyak was employed as a secretary for several years at the law firm of Loomis-Poland-Wilson & Griffith from where she then retired. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna. Her weekly shopping trips to K-Mart will always be remembered by her family, as the love of family and lasting memories created shall remain forever. On June 25, 1949, Mrs. Hornyak married William Hornyak, and together they celebrated 50 years of marriage until his passing in 1999. Survivors include her son Mark Hornyak of Ravenna; daughters Pamela (William) Ungar of Mentor, and Barbara (Mickey) DeWitt of Mantua; her grandchildren Todd (Kelly) Ungar, Kati (Patrick) O’Brien, Kyle (Jen Bechard) DeWitt, Kevin (Hayley) DeWitt; and 7 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death was a brother  Joseph Pandolfi. No calling hours.  A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua with Rev. Edward Stafford of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church officiating. Final resting place will be private. The family wishes to extend a very special thank you to Maxine Manglona, Cindy Guyette, and Phyllis  Fussaro for the loving care they gave mom, and the comfort provided to all of her family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.
