Jeanne Cates

May 14, 1927 ~ October 3, 2021 (age 94)

Jeanne Louise Cates, 94, passed to eternal rest at the Woodlands in Ravenna on October 3, 2021, with family by her side.

Jeanne was born in Garrettsville on May 14, 1927, a daughter of Willard Hiram and Annah Crites Bishop, and was a lifetime Garrettsville resident.  She married Dan Cates on September 29, 1946, enjoying many happy years with him until his passing in 1991.

Jeanne grew up enjoying summers with her brothers at the family cottage at Lake Milton.  She led an active life, playing basketball and saxophone in high school, and for many years being a Girl Scout leader, serving as a poll worker, helping with and donating to Toys for Tots and the food pantry.  She did bookkeeping and ordering for several family businesses, including Cates TV Repair and Service, the Variety Mart convenience store, and Sky Plaza Laundromat.  Jeanne loved to feed the birds, especially cardinals.  She enjoyed cats, reading, and in recent years visiting with great-granddaughter Briannah.

Jeanne was a member of the Garrettsville United Methodist Church since 1940.

She was pre-deceased by parents Willard and Annah Bishop, husband Dan Cates, brothers Wayne Bishop, Robert Bishop, daughter Dianne Lough, son Scott Cates, granddaughter Renee Fairbee, and grandson David Lough.

Jeanne leaves behind one brother Donald Bishop (Sally) from Michigan, son Larry Cates from Hiram, daughter Barbara Whittenberger (Bill) from Leavittsburg, son Dan Wolski (Donna) from Maryland, son-in-law Dusty Lough, grandchildren Angie McCoy, Dusty Wolfe, Brian Sizemore, Kris Sizemore, and Annah Cates, and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Woodlands Health and Rehabilitation Center for their excellent care of Jeanne.

Jeanne will be remembered at a small private ceremony at Fairview Cemetery in Hiram.  Memorials may be sent to Garrettsville United Methodist Church.
