MANTUA

Helen A. DeWitt, 99 years of age, passed away peacefully Tuesday August 4, 2020. Born in Matamoras, Pennsylvania on February 2, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Lena (Howsoski) Shewchuk. On September 20, 1947, Helen married “The Love of Her Life”, following which they moved to Mantua in 1953. They immediately became active members of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, where Helen participated in the Altar and Rosary Society, the Garden Club, and the Knights of Columbus Isabella’s. She was a familiar face at the K.of C. fish dinners, and helping at the church funeral luncheons, always enjoying greeting and serving people with her warm smile. Helen was a Crestwood Band Patron, and a Red Cross Swimming Instructor for many years. She always was happy to share her cooking and baking skills with everyone. There was never a stray animal she didn’t care for or adopt.   Helen and Don enjoyed ballroom dancing and Polkas, and she will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 72 years Don. In addition to Don, she is survived by her daughter Donna (Bill deceased) Maynard, and son Allen “Mickey” (Barb) DeWitt both of Mantua; grandchildren Shannon (Chuck) Sayre, Shawn Maynard, Kevin (Hayley) DeWitt and Dr. Kyle (Dr. Jen Bechard) DeWitt, and great-grandchildren Livie, Ella and Emma Sayre. She was preceded in death by 3 sisters and 3 brothers. No calling hours. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Mantua-Shalersville Fire Department, or a charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements are by the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua, where condolences and memories may be viewed at www.greenfamilyfuneralhome.com.
