WILLIAM GLENN PHELPS, 80, of Garrettsville passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 after several years of declining health. A lifelong resident of Portage County, Bill was the son of T. N. (Noel) and Ruby Phelps of Freedom Township. In June of 1958, Bill’s heart was stolen and kept for 60 plus years by his devoted and loving wife, Janet Lee Spencer. Together, they raised three fine sons: Scott (Amy) of Garrettsville, Jeff (Janet) of Abbeville, SC and Mark (Gina) of Wadsworth. His “lucky number” was 7 and, as fate would have it, Bill and Janet were blessed with 7 grandchildren between their three sons. A graduate of James A. Garfield High School, Bill was an accomplished athlete, excelling in baseball and basketball. His coaching career began immediately after graduating and spanned more than 50 years in the community. Bill was revered as a coach and mentor to many generations of Garrettsville’s youth. He was inducted into the Ohio Hot Stove League Hall of Fame in 2002 and into the James A. Garfield Hall of Fame in 2009. In 2017, Garrettsville’s Library Park on South Street was renamed Phelps Park. He loved coaching, but Bill also loved spending time with his family playing cards and games (many of which he created) and with his many Boxer dogs. Bill was predeceased by three sisters: Infant Judy Darlene, Marjorie (Louis Patch), Joyce (Jerry Henceroth) and one brother, Richard (Bettina). In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, Bill is survived by his youngest brother, David, of Simpsonville, SC. Cremation has taken place. Final resting place will be Drakesburg Cemetery, Freedom Twp. Please join the Phelps family on Sunday, May 5, 2019 between 3 and 7 pm to celebrate Bill’s full and rich life at Sugar Bush Golf Club, 11186 State Route 88, Garrettsville, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your local youth organization.
