Sylvester F. “Sye” Gharky, 91 years of age, became Our Gift to God on Thursday October 26, 2017 at his residence. Mr. Gharky was God’s Gift to Us on October 12, 1926 in Auburn Township, Ohio the son of the late Frank and Rosemary (Kalinia) Gharky.A graduate of Bainbridge High School, he was a former Geauga County resident residing in Mantua since 1948. Sye served his country in World War II in the U.S. Army, following which he was employed at Gulf Oil in Cleveland in both delivery and sales from 1953-1983. From 1983-1993, he was employed as a bus driver by the Crestwood School System from where he retired. He held memberships in Portage Faith United Methodist Church, American Legion Post No. 193 of Mantua, and was a lifetime member of the Garrettsville V.F.W. Post. He also was a member and Past President of the Mantua Rotary Club.His life was filled with many enjoyments such as bowling, traveling the United States in his mobile home, and in 1983 he took a worldwide trip over a period of three months. He had been active with the Boy Scouts of America and was a member of Tread & Trail Camping Group. For a period of ten years he resided in Florida in the winter months. His family will forever cherish the memories of their trips to Niagara Falls and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and the warm and loving smile that dad always had for them. Survivors include his children Dale (Pat) Gharky of Mogadore, Eugene (Doris) Gharky of Rootstown, Sue (Tony) Smosarski of Mantua and Patty (Robert)Reitz of Ravenna; his brother Robert (Virginia) Gharky of Garrettsville; 7 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.Sye was preceded in death by his wife Bernice Gharky in 1974, his granddaughter Laura Gharky, his great-granddaughter Olivia Smosarski and sisters Laurene Nelson and Margaret “ Marge” Pilny. Calling hours will be Sunday from 4:00P.M.-6:00 P.M. at the Green Family FuneralHome & Crematory Service, 4668 Pioneer Trail at the corner of St. Rt. 44, Mantua, Ohio 44255. Funeral services will be held Monday October 30, 2017, 11:00 A.M. at Portage Faith United Methodist Church, 9922 St.Rt. 44, Mantua, Ohio 44255 with Pastor Joyce Hoile officiating. Final resting place will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Mantua Village, Ohio, where full military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army Honor Guard Team, assisted by members of Mantua American Legion Post No. 193.
